Transforming First Impressions: A Softscape Landscaping Project on the Sunshine Coast
When it comes to increasing your home’s street appeal, the front entrance is everything. It’s the first impression, the welcome mat, and often sets the tone for the entire property. As softscape landscapers on the Sunshine Coast, we recently completed a stunning project that transformed an ignored front garden into a low-maintenance, deliciously smelling and eye-catching entrance.

This project was designed with many goals in mind: to create a warm, inviting garden entrance that thrives in the Sunshine Coast’s sandy soils and sub-tropical climate, pick plants that will mature in a years time, ready to sell, and attempt keep the mosquitos at bay (if possible). By carefully selecting hardy, drought-tolerant plants we were able to create a timeless and elegant entrance that will only look better with age.

Designing for the Sunshine Coast Climate
One of the challenges homeowners can face on the Sunshine Coast is landscaping for sandy soil. Sandy soils drain quickly, often leading to water stress in plants not suited for it. Our approach is to work with the soil—not against it.
Our softscape strategy prioritses working with the existing soil (if possible), so we chose a palette of low-maintenance, coastal-hardy plants that thrive in sandy soil. Here’s how we brought this front entrance to life.

The Plant Selection: Beauty Meets Practicality
To frame the entrance and soften the hardscape elements, we introduced a mix of coastal-tolerant plants that offer year-round interest and are perfect for Sunshine Coast gardens.
🌿 Iceberg Rose
A classic choice for entrance gardens, Iceberg Roses are tough, repeat-flowering shrubs that thrive in sandy soils when properly mulched. Their bright white blooms pop against darker green foliage and create a beautiful contrast against the grey-toned pavers. They’re ideal for adding a touch of elegance without being too high maintenance.
🌿 French Lavender
Lavender is always a winner in coastal gardens. The French variety in particular loves well-draining soil and full sun, making it perfect for the Sunshine Coast climate. Its fragrant purple blooms attract pollinators and add a splash of colour, while also serving as a natural pest deterrent.
🌿 Dichondra Repens
Also known as Kidney Weed, this low-growing ground cover is excellent between pavers or around stepping stones. It tolerates light foot traffic and helps to retain soil moisture, making it a sustainable addition to any front yard landscape.
🌿 Mossie Blocker
An increasingly popular plant in coastal gardens, Mossie Blocker (Pelargonium graveolens) not only looks great but also helps repel mosquitoes—a practical and natural alternative to chemical sprays. Its scented foliage and compact growth habit make it a great filler plant near walkways.
🌿 Pigface
A Sunshine Coast favourite, Pigface (Carpobrotus glaucescens) is a spreading succulent with striking, daisy-like flowers that bloom throughout the warmer months. It’s incredibly drought-tolerant and binds sandy soils, making it both functional and beautiful.
🌿 Greenwave
Greenwave is a hardy, native shrub ideal for shaping and hedging. With its rounded form and soft green leaves, it acts as a lush backdrop for flowering plants, adding texture and depth to the garden bed.
🌿 Westringia ‘Xena’
Another native winner, Westringia Xena is compact, evergreen, and great for Sunshine Coast gardens due to its ability to withstand coastal winds, salt, and low-fertility soils. It requires very little water once established, making it a favourite for sustainable design.
Low Maintenance, High Impact
All plants used in this project were chosen for their resilience to local conditions, and visual appeal. Together, they create a a beautiful sale ready statement whilst extremely easy to maintain (with the exception of the roses).
By blending native and non-native plants that complement each other in both colour and function, we’ve created a layered and textured landscape ‘Wabi Sabi’ style.
